I have just finished my first attempt at converting the Naalaa version of the game 1945. It seems to work ok but could possibly need a few more, shall we say, refinements... I have also included the original text file... It took me most of the day but was fun to do... Enjoy. J 1945.zip (356.34 KB)

Cannot take the credit. I was fortunate enough to be able to simply convert it... But thank you just the same...

Hello, great game Johnno
I discover RCbasic today (seems very great).. and NAALAA basic 2 or 3 weeks ago
You have code 1945 on both... what is your opinion ? Witch one is the best , advantages ? speedy ? easier ?
Thanks

Which one is best? Difficult to say. Both are relatively easy to use and both take a lot of time to master. Naalaa can do 3D type games but I have not seen any for RC. This is not an issue for me as I tend to focus mainly on 2D. As to the speed, in regards to 1945, I could not see any difference. I suppose a set of performance type programs would be able to answer that one... lol Advantages? Both use a simple IDE. Both are 'clean' looking and simple enough to edit and execute. So far, I can only use RC, in Geany (IDE). I use Geany as my IDE for most "basic" programs. I like the colour themes...
Of the two, I find RC Basic easier to use because it is very similar to SDLBasic, which I also use a lot.
RC is a great choice if you are wanting to get into programming. Maybe a struggle for someone with no experience but that's why examples and forums exist. To help gain experience. If you already know how to program then you will find RC relatively easy to use.
Will RC set you up for a programming career? I don't think so. But, for me anyway, that doesn't mater. I enjoy learning and using RC. If it produces a career then that's a bonus.
We are a small community and glad to have new members... If you have ANY questions about RC Basic, just ask, we're here to help.
Before I forget... Welcome.

(You never used BLITZ3D in the past ?)... I will show soon my 2D games But now i want to stop Blitz3D and try something else I discover NAALAA, SDL and RC in the same time few days ago..... indeed RC seems to be a little more easier than NAALAA. And I have found a problem with NAALAA : if your code .TXT is about 1000ko the IDE do not support... My last 2D game in BLITZ is more than 1000ko... so problem! What is the real difference between SDLbasic and RCBasic ? RC is more "modern" ? Seems that there is no more support for SDL ? Which one is the more funny/easier ? For my next game I am still hesitating, I want to concentrate on only 1 basic language. I suppose, as we are on the RC forum, you will say RC

I attempted to use Blitz3D years ago. "Attempt" because I knew very little about Blitz and programming in general.
As a member of the RC forum of course I am going to promote RC. But I still use other "basics" and when on those forums I would promote that basic as well. I usually modify or adapt an SDLbasic game to run on RCBasic and Naalaa for two reasons. 1. Just to see if I can and 2. To compare performance.
You are right SDL is old and not as modern as most but I still use it because it's the language that I know best. Eventually, as my skills improve with RC, the same will apply... Like when we used to use qbasic 1.1 then moved to qbasic 4.5 then some moved to qbasic 7.1... I see that the more modern basics will move forward and the older ones will begin to fade away...
It can be a puzzling time to choose just one basic language. But, in the end, I would suggest that you continue to experiment until you find one that 'you' feel comfortable with... Who knows, maybe in a few years time, basic will be the thing of the past and bigger and better programming languages will pop up. Such is the life of a programmer... It's not all about the destination. It's all about the journey.
I need coffee... I'm not making sense... again... lol

BLITZ is perhaps the most easy, with classic commands, no (), no[] (for exemple text 10,10,"HELLO WORLD":drawimage image,10,10) but it is old and I don't like the REDRAW command... it is a Swap... For example if a use 2 Redraw (for some reason, for example to freeze the animation and open a little text area) in the same loop, there are visual bugs because of the images swap.
Apparently it is not the case with RC ? It is a real refresh that i can use everywhere ?

drfloyd I would recommend checking out the retrogamecoding forum. I am on there and so is the developer of NAALAA, SpecBAS, MyBasic, and a few other dialects. They are always having conversations comparing different dialects. Like johnno56 I was mainly an sdlBasic coder for a long time. I learned to program with QBasic back on Windows 95. There are also alot of things I like about NAALAA and some other stuff. I have also experimented with love2D. I am probably the only person on the planet who tried love2D and ended up not liking it LOL. But many people love it (pun was absolutely intended). If you are looking for a BASIC for game development I think RC,SDL, and NAALAA are all pretty solid choices. But I am obviously biased towards RCBasic so RCBasic is going to be my top choice .

I have tried LOVE2D... and also APP GAM EKIT, I think they are not real basic... I hate them ! I will use RC if i successful to install it on a USD Drive, if not i will perhaps use SDL (not NAALAA at the moment because the IDE do not support big .TXT files)

I also enjoy using Love2D, not too keen on the loooong keywords, but still fun to use. Still on tutorials... lol Because I use Linux, only some of the Window$ based 2D game creators, work well enough to produce games without crashing...
Oh brilliant... I'm trying to create coherent sentences with a system that is totally lacking in caffeine... Time to grab coffee...

I don't have windows available right now, I am curious if you can get this working on a usb drive, I don't see why not.
