I may be wrong, but I think the creator, may be taking the size of the C64 screen literally. Screen sizes like that I normally maximise the display so I can see it better. Sometimes when doing that the display is stretched and looks a bit odd. My eyesight is not as it once was which is basically why I maximise. But, for this game I would have to agree, it's a bit dark. As for the remainder of the C64 games, on the whole, a pretty much normal. Back then, especially with speed and memory and colour restrictions, most games had to be fairly "simple" in its appearance. Four megahertz CPU's could only do so much. One of the reasons that the colour palette was limited. Black, like modern TV displays today, is used to make the other colours "stand out" - contrast. Compare the colour palettes of the Amstrad and the C64. If Arc was made using an Amstrad, you would definitely notice the difference in the display... But, games like Arc, would lean towards a darker medieval colour scheme whereas a platformer would be much brighter. Again, the speed of the character can be effected by how "busy" the screen is. A parallax display, on old 8 bit, may require a chunk of RAM to "move" the layer. If the character has say, 8 or more "frames", it can easily be slowed... The effects of my last coffee is wearing off. I had better take care of that... lol I have always enjoyed the old games... I no longer have my Amstrad but I still play using an emulator... Ah, the chunky graphics and the cheesy sounds, and the memories... Have a great day. J Very nice and technical analysis. My prediction is that Arc of Valtana will not be the 1st, 2nd or 3rd place winner. This is a very objective prediction although I only played Arc of Valtana and Simple.

Attack Attack is at least more beautiful than Arc of Valtana. Arc of Valtana is too ugly. "Artist" is mentioned on its developer's webpage but this game doesn't look like a game made by an artist.

One more thing,
tbird's Wine: cannot run Simple.
johnno56's Wine: cannot run Damnation Alley and Jack Deadly.
Wow...using different versions of Wine?

Could possibly be different versions of wine. The other ones ran flawlessly...I am pretty sure I am using wine 1.8, although I would have to double check that when I get home.

About Simple, The first level: black, white, orange The second level: black, white, blue Only three colors were used in each level. This is the pattern. Perhaps the author also used three colors in all other levels. Although used only three colors in each level, graphics are ok. Looks like Sokaban? Yes. However, player only needs to push in Sokaban. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgWibgp2NwMThis sentence is interesting but accurate: "The 'only' real instructions was during the 'introduction' when a combination of cursor key and spacebar enables the player to "pull" an object."

About Jack Deadly, it is a better platform game if I compare it with Arc of Valtana. Yeah.
The graphics are nicer and the playing area is bigger than Arc of Valtana. The jumping response of the player's character is not slow after I press the key for jumping.
The developer made a very special method to display each letter in the menu. The method can generate a good visual effect!
This game is ok but this game is also a difficult game. For example, player's character easily dies in Level 1. In fact, there is no save/load game system. Many ordinary players may easily give up in level 1 or level 2!

I will have to take you at your word in regards to Jack Deadly, but your point about "dying" too early, is quite valid. If the game has multiple levels then the player should be "eased" into the game (unless a harder difficulty has been chosen from the menu) so as to become "comfortable" with the layout and controls. Difficulty would then increase as the game progresses. I agree, about players quitting too early, as it's quite discouraging being "thrown in at the deep end" too early in the game. But the same goes for a game that is too easy. We can't have the player getting bored or falling asleep... lol
Anyway... Time for a bit of mindless TV watching before I pluck up the courage to get some more coding done.... Have a great day!

(unless a harder difficulty has been chosen from the menu) <===== There is no Easy/Medium/Difficult selection function in this game. My guess: Jack Deadly will not be the champion.
