Tbird would probably be the best to ask about delta timing... I think it was added to my games so as to improve the performance.. I think the problem, with the guys at syntaxbomb, is that they are relying too heavily on "virtual machines". I can understand them using VM's, mainly because there a many sources of software to run, from different operating systems. The "easiest" thing to do is to run them all with a VM. One computer to run simulated OS's. Therein lies the main cause of "slowness". Run a "Windows" computer that is emulating a "Linux" computer. Most computers are configured to run an OS as optimally as possible. But, then we go and bog them down by making the CPU run two operating systems. Then they wonder why some games run so slowly. Of course, if the mother machine is a super, a-one, beast of a machine, then a VM will have little impact...
There is also another issue. Everyone in the competition will be reviewing each game on there own machines, so they can see each game run, then vote accordingly. I think there were two native Linux games and some that had a Linux version included as well as Mac games. Some users will be reviewing with laptops and others with desktops. Performance will be influenced by CPU power and or with a combination of various types of Graphics cards. Which means... The Linux games will run without issue on my machine. All of the Windows games ran on my machine with varying degrees of performance. When it comes to judging a Windows game, I would have to allow some flexibility, for slower games.
For example. There is an Asteroids game made with Game Maker Studio 2 that, on my machine, ran quite slowly. I would not take performance into account but focus on the games other features.
Delta time: In a nutshell, should always be used when a game is being influenced frame rates. I think without delta time, the rotating of the asteroids; firing of the gun and animated explosions would be "out of whack". But check with Tbird... That's just my guess...
