Hey all, I was looking for some helpful input on game ideas for the roguelike game jam, the theme is "Death is only the beginning".
My first idea is you start as a middle aged man/woman then you level...down with age, weapons become heavy your endurance gets lower, this will be short you have to die by "natural" causes. You become a spirit and take over another adventurer and the process repeats.
When you level down you pick which stats decrease instead of increase....thats my idea.
Tonight when I get home I will be working on a procedural level generator, I will attempt it first on my own without research then probably go read on it after failure lol.
Thanks, looking forward to input.

My first thought was, "I have trouble coming up with ideas at the best of times..." lol Then I focused on your "title". Seeing as this seems to be a quote from, "The Mummy (1999)", why not base the main character on the Mummy? The more people he can find the quicker he can regenerate. Find 'treasure' to increase score; 'sacred' objects reverse the latest step of regeneration; Collect scorpions to increase strength/health. Temple/Pyramid guards increase/decrease stamina. Collect guard remains for 'small' increases in strength or regeneration.
Well... I'm totally impressed... I came up with that idea 'without' coffee.... lol
Just remember... you asked... lol

johnno56 That's a pretty good idea, I admit I was bummed out by the theme as I wanted to do a reverse aging idea, but then the theme came and I tried to fit my original idea into it... .I know it was bad, I do like your idea. kennn It shouldnt be too hard I have the idea in my head about how to do it, I started on it and made some simple art to demonstrate....oh the ideas I have to integrate this into my engine.....gets me excited!

When everything is finished, and if you have the time and are willing, I would like to know how you go about creating a procedural level generator'....

I usually like planning things out better but I wrote out a web on a piece of paper of the elements I need to tackle and will attempt to do them, it looks alot less scary that way lol.

Planning seems to be one of the most important skills of game making... Hmmm... that could be part of 'my' problem... lol

66 contestants are in the contest! This is a fierce contest! However, it should be a healthy competition!

I will have time again tonight and should have the procedural engine first iteration done. It's actually not as hard as I thought it would be, I am trying very hard to comment the code and making sure it's as clear as possible. Thanks n00b

I would definitely like to see how you implement the procedural generation. This is actually something I have never attempted. I am looking forward to seeing your code on this.

Well I have managed to get another 20 minutes on it, we are putting up hay like crazy weather is not cooperating. I am hoping by the time the game jam is finished I will have at least a procedural engine made lol.
