The 'free' version is available to 'active' members of their forum.
I downloaded BlitzMax for 64 bit Linux. Compiling the 'audio' failed with every sample program tested. Website says that 'audio' is included.
BlitzPlus is 'free' for all but is only available for Windows.

Yep. DirectX. I have directX installed (part of the Wine package)... Even though BlitzMax came with SDL Audio, it failed to compile... Would have been nice to try it out... Oh well...
BlitzPlus seems to be another story... Just downloaded and installed. All samples ran. None of them used sound. Particle and 3D stuff slowed down the sample when more particles etc were added. I think that it may be a Linux issue.
These will probably run better on Windows. But, for use on Linux, I'll give them a miss...

Wow. It's been a long time since I heard anything from Darkbasic. I remember being impressed by all the cool graphic samples. I'll try to run it through Wine, but I don't like my chances. (5 minutes later) Oh, well... It was worth a shot...

johnno56, "Active members" is an easy requirement. You easily became an active member here. Bugs of BlitzMaxNG will be removed quickly if users report the bugs quickly.

I refuse to pay for any "Basic". Blitz included. BlitzPlus was made Open Source in 2014. It's almost 2021 and 'Max' is still 'on the market'. The Linux version of BlitzMax was released in 2005 (for linux). The current version was released in 2007. It is possible that the current audio bug is 13 years old... There hasn't been a Linux release since 2007 and I would guess that they will not be releasing another version anytime soon.
"Max" fans decided not to wait for more releases, so along comes "DX".
Linux and DirectX do not play well together...
If I was running Windows I would jump at the chance. But, I have been using Linux since 2005, with absolutely no plans to go back...
My Basic of choice is RC. I may tinker with others, from time to time, but RC is where I live now....

My Basic of choice is RC. I may tinker with others, from time to time, but RC is where I live now.... Wrong..wrong..wrong..... There are three different things: 1. Old BlitzMax: this was originally developed by the Blitz's company. The final version is version 1.51(released on 21 September 2015). BlitzMax became free open-source software on that day. The Blitz's company abandoned the development of BlitzMax on that day. 2. BlitzMax NG: I think that you don't know what NG means. NG means new generation. After the above final version BlitzMax was abandoned, a community member has been continuing to improve this final version. Afterwards, the member has been releasing all his versions as BlitzMax NG. Bugs are actively fixed. 3. BlitzMax DX: developed by Blitzcoder Forum's owner. The new Linux version(v0.129.3.45) of "BlitzMax NG" was released on Oct 15, 2020: github.com/bmx-ng/bmx-ng/releases/tag/v0.129.3.45.linux.x64

Unaware of NG. I searched for the most recent version of Max and it happens to be version 129.3.45.linux.x64 which was the version that failed to run. The error was caused by the absence of dependencies. The github link is the version I downloaded. Note that "audio" is included. All samples failed because 'audio' was missing. I managed to find a site that actually detailed the dependencies. Followed the install instructions. Only one dependency was no longer available. So far, all the samples that I have tried, have compiled and run. Those samples that required sound produced sound. I will try to compare it with RC. (blitz obviously has a LOT of functionality) I will stick with simple stuff that both applications can do. I thing I did notice about 'Max' is that it can take some time to compile... Not a deal-breaker. Results is what I tend to focus on.... This could take some time. It's been a 'long' time since I used Blitz....

What to choose for Android?

What to choose for Android? Old BlitzMax and BlitzMax NG: don't support Android. BlitzMax DX: an old post mentions "Android Target Support(Stable/Work In Progress)". Now only the alpha version is released. RCBasic: supports game export to Android OS. My opinion: use RCBasic but also wait for the news of the finished version of BlitzMax DX.

The only issue of RC is the stand alone for Windows : with lot of DLL (not really a problem) and the assets not hidden
