aurel I actually use MX on a old laptop I have. MX is probably the best distro to use on older hardware in my opinion. It has a bunch of custom tools for installing drivers configuring your system for minimum specs. But it is probably not the best distro to use if you want to build a modern gaming rig or a workstation for video editing, animation, etc. As with any advice on linux, you need to try out a few distros and setups to find the one that best fits your needs. I am using MX for coding mainly and its been pretty awesome for the past couple of months. But it absolutely sucks if you want to use wine. If you are trying to run windows software or do any kind of gaming, look for a modern distro that supports Wayland instead of Xorg.

I think for most windows programs it will probably be fine. The one example I can give of a program that doesn't work so great is anim8or. I use it for 3D modelling and it has all kinds of glitches in MX. It seems to be a compositor issue though because it does run pretty smoothly in Fedora. Another issue I ran into was the drivers for my XP Pen tablet were giving me trouble in MX. But I am probably the only person on the planet who setup a linux machine so I could use anim8or and my weird setup for my drawing monitor. Thats why I said test out multiple distros to find the one that works for your specific needs. Solid Distros that I have had a good experience with: * MX Linux - Great for keeping old hardware alive and general purpose use, coding, and I also was using it to test out a jenkins server. Another bonus is the software center actually works. * Pop OS - Great for gaming and coding. If you are going to use this, just download the regular ISO, even if you have an nvidia card. The nvidia ISO is broken. I build the linux version of RCBasic with Pop OS. Since its based on Ubuntu, if you build a C++ application you will have compatability with most Ubuntu and Debian based distros. The downside here is the software center is buggy and crashes all the time. Also if you try to install a different desktop environment it does something weird. I installed KDE on PopOS and it combined KDE with the Gnome elements from Cosmic to make the most broken OS I have ever used. If you want to try it yourself they provided instructions on there website: Change Desktop in Pop OS * Fedora - I currently have this setup as an art workstation with the XP Pen Artist 15.6 tablet. Anim8or runs better on this distro than any other distro I have tested and my drawing tablet has zero lag on Fedora. The downside of Fedora is installing wine does not automatically install the libraries for 32-bit support like it does on other distros. I had to dig through stackoverflow to find all the libraries I needed to install. And while my tablet was recognized by the kernel drivers, I manually disabled them so I could use OpenTabletDriver which works so much better. Distros that suck (My opinion obviously): * Ubuntu - I used to loved Ubuntu but it has gotten bad. Snaps are kinda slow, Flatpak is disabled out of the box, and AppImages don't work at all (which is a deal breaker for me). The UI also makes certain elements in applications bigger than they are suppose to be and cuts off portions of some screens. Its the reason I resized everything in RCBasic Studio in the last release. Canonical should be ashamed of themselves for releasing this garbage. * Elementary OS - I stuck with this for a few months but I could never get used to it. There is practically nothing in the software center by default. You can fix that by going to flathub and installing any app from there to get the flathub apps showing up in the software center. Elementary OS comes with a browser called Epiphany which crashes every couple of minutes. One of the first things you are going to want to do is install a different browser. The app center also crashes alot. You also really can't customize much of anything. And while it is based on Ubuntu, some upstream packages can actually break it. It looks really nice though so if you just want a computer to show off but don't actually want to use it for anything, this might be the OS for you. I know I didn't mention Mint, Manjaro, Puppy linux, etc. I have messed with Mint a few times and it works fine but I just don't personally like using it. Its definitely worth a try if you want something closer to windows.
