My Linux Mint OS has developed a nasty random feature. I may be off the air for a day or two, whilst I reinstall and recover my stuff,.. I'm getting too old for this kind of pressure... lol

Good luck with your recovery. I am hopefully not going to have to reinstall until Ubuntu 20.04 is released.

Good luck Johnno One of reasons i don't like Linux . From my experience with so many linux distros i download and tried . Currently i only have one installed wifiSlax i used to test wifi things. Recently i install newer one called bugTraq which require newer hardware but is much more stable and respond better than wifiSlax..
to short story why must be Mint? there are others with similar capability

Aurel
Orinially, I started with Ubuntu 5.10, then switched to Mint at version 13.04 and have used it ever since. Sure, I've tried others, but I always came back to Mint. Since version 13 this is the first time that I have had an OS problem... There are other versions of Linux that are either faster, prettier, more 'bells and whistles', more popular but I feel more comfortable using Mint...
Compared to my machine, my wife's laptop is too small. I missing my keyboard already...lol
Update: Ordered a new HD for the installation. I tried to copy files from one drive to another, using a bootable USB of Mint, without success because you need to be a 'super user' to copy some files. A USB is considered a 'guest'... Hopefully, once the drive arrives and the installation is completed, I can then copy my home directory and all should be ok...

It's 07:45am and I've slept in...
Four attempt to install a fresh OS...
Initially, Mint 18.1 (my then current version) died a horrible death due to a combination of video card ROM and OS corruption. Not a problem, now would be a good chance to upgrade to the latest version, so you would think...
Attempt #1. Mint 19.1 installed as it should but performed horribly slow and eventually died...
Attempt #2. As you do... Attempt the same installation... Got to the point of beginning to transfer files and instead of copying at a rate of about 30mb/sec it gradually slowed to about 6mb/sec and would take about 7 hours to finish...
Attempt #3. Mint 19.1 installed without a hitch. Began to re-install my 'usual' collection of software... when parts of the main menu bar "took their bat and ball and went home"... never to return again... The one thing I did not consider... "What if the bootable USB ISO image was corrupt?". Kah-ching! Ding! Ding! Ding! and the player wins a Teddy bear....
Attempt #4. Mint 18.3... Downloaded 18.3... During one of 19.1's lucid moments... lol This time I burnt it to a DVD... Installed and is now running. Installation of the usual programs are under way with no apparent loss of performance... or menus... Although 18.3 is a couple of years old it will still be supported for the next two years... Maybe by then I might be brave enough to upgrade again... I'm getting too old for this... lol

Well if you were getting too old, you would have given up, so the way I see it is your age was a benefit by experience and not a hindrance.
I have been using Lubuntu for 2 years now not a hitch, Windows on the other hand has been a steaming pile as usual.
Glad your back in gear, cant wait for some more demos and overall interesting topics you come up with.
