I talked about this forum a few months ago. rcbasic.freeforums.net/thread/290/dark-bit-factory-forumI did not know that there is a statistics page in that forum at that time. I discovered the following statistics page recently. www.dbfinteractive.com/forum/index.php?action=statsThe statistics are valuable because the data let us conclude that hobbyist programmer decreased considerably last ten years!!!!!! So horrible! (Number of New Post Per Year) 2019 188 2018 | 395 | 2017 | 354 | 2016 | 744 | 2015 | 987 | 2014 | 1186 | 2013
| 2501 | 2012 | 4443 | 2011 | 8490 | 2010 | 3553 | 2009 | 9882 | 2008 | 13500 | 2007 | 22156
| 2006 | 16253

I wonder if the statistics go into the 'reasons' for the decline of 'posts'? Do you think that after 13 years the number of hobbyists has declined or the number of those posting has declined? Either way, I suppose after 13 years of doing the same thing, could be the reason for the decline in both posting and programming. As I have mentioned before, coders are looking for quicker and better results, unfortunately 'raw' coding would not be the way that they would go... Thirteen years ago, my list of hobbies, could be counted on one hand. I now have fewer hobbies but coding is still one of them...
I find it sad that the numbers have declined, but as a long-time hobbyist, I do not allow the numbers to either direct or dictate my decision to continue coding... I would consider myself fortunate to be included amongst the '188' even though I would wish the numbers to be '22156'.
Code on...

aurel, Hello....any opinion? What is the reason for decreasing of programming hobbyists last several years?
johnno56, 22156 posts were reduced to 188 posts during 12 years! It is due to the fact that programming activity is weaker than 12 years ago. But why? Part of the reason should be that the company of Unity started to provide a free version of Unity in 2009. Many programming hobbyists were interested in free Unity and downloaded it. Learning and Using Unity became their hobbies. Developing 3D games was easier with Unity. They could also made a lot of money if their games were good!!!!
Money! Money! Money!

Lot of money? For example i think 80% of games on Itch.io are just demos or modification of already existing code picked from somewhere else...thre is no money there.
Why ...I blame python(he he) ...times are changed, there is no real interest...

I have been watching videos on youtube about how people are repairing and restoring old 8 bit computers. Comparing the 'before' and 'after' results. Small number of machines were beyond repair but still they tried. Why would anyone do this? Why would anyone want to spend the time and money in restoring a computer, that by all comparisons, are "toys" in the light of today's computers? What does this have to do with declining numbers? Everything. Only those that still care enough; still enjoy; still willing to put in the effort, when it comes to programming for fun and pleasure, will continue to produce fun games/applications regardless of how many of us remain. It's only natural that most will "move on" and develop interests in other languages and their reasons are many and varied but they will move on. 22156 or 188 or even 1, tells me, that there are still people interested in programming.
There is a sense of satisfaction in restoring an old computer that the younger generation may not appreciate but we shouldn't let that stop us from restoring more... Whether we are few or many, as long as we enjoy coding, coding will survive...
Well, I've now got my morning coffee, so I can stop babbling now... Have a great day, guys!

aurel, Some superior game developers are really selling fantastic games on Itch.io!!!!!! (The percentage of these developers may not be too high.) Wow! I also want to sell some great games but I still don't have sufficient knowledge and skills!!!!!!!!! johnno56, You are a very loyal programming hobbyist!!!!!! Sure!!!
