Of course the data are also helpful to amateur game developers.  Moreover, I was surprised by the first item(OS Version). Why? The computer market was dominated by Windows 10 + Windows 7! - I am not surprised at all,it is natural and most peaople use windows , do you see Linux % , it is funny to see that.

aurel, Wow! You used the adjective "funny" to describe the situation! Suddenly, I have a lot of questions about Linux. Is the history of Linux over 15 years? Is it a freeware? Why does free Linux with a history of over 15 years fail miserably when it faces paid Windows???  johnno56, I never use Linux. Windows can do many things which Linux cannot do? Is this the actual reason computer users don't like Linux?  |

The differences between Linux and Windows... Where to start? The main reasons I use Linux is: It's free and open source. Not effected by viruses and malware. It's not that computer users don't like using Linux. In the early days, making changes to the system, involved a LOT of "command line" knowledge. This was a BIG "turn off" for a lot of users. There is still some command line tasks, but nowhere near the amount of yesteryear... The modern "desktop" is so much more polished...
The fact is, that the majority of the personal computer world, happens to be Windows based. The largest OS providers usually have the highest budget to develop the OS. This could be why Windows may be able to do a lot more because a lot more applications can be developed because of a huge budget. Almost all of the apps for Linux are created by volunteers... Linux has a LOT more developers but most of their work is done 'part-time'...
I have been using Linux now for 15 years and I have no plans to change this side of the grave... Linux itself has been around since 1991. It was free and open then just as it is now... Linux has WAY more "versions" than Windows mainly because anyone can make changes to the kernel to produce their own "flavour" of Linux. But still, Windows has the "lions share" of the market, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Depending on who you ask, a Windows, Linux or MacOS user, will always promote their OS as the best...

Linux as linux is not that bad IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DOING, and that is a main problem, then more than 1000 distros 50% of them unfinished- full of strange bugs and so many other problems, I like it for some specific things like wifi. Recently i have instaled one small distro based on Devuan called Miyo Linux ..lot of fun i have with it,it is really bare bone but is stable etc..etc... Ahhh yes Johno says developers....better word is patchers.  |

Yeah. It can be a bit of a minefield when looking for a distro that suits personal needs... The joys of trial and error... lol

johnno56, Your informative article provided a large amount of knowledge to us!!  Thank you very much! Wow! Linux is 30 years old.  We need to praise the Linux development teams(those volunteers) because Linux should be a very complicated masterpiece. However, the development teams don't have any salary or wage.  aurel, The above description is similar to your description for games on Itch.io.  I think that Linux is a good and healthy competitor to Windows.  |

Hmm... I seriously doubt that Linux is a competitor to Windows... Maybe so if they were producing similar products... and if 'both' were charging a price for the OS... Linux, in relation to cost, is 'not' a competitor... After all, how can Windows compete when Linux is free? lol I would probably say that Linux would be a viable 'alternative' to Windows in regards to basic applications...

Yes i agree with Johnno, by the way Linux should be small ,fast ,more userfriendly OS.
Not bloated ,resource hungry monsters like some of big distros are today.
Many devlopers work on distros at his spare time for fun.
As i already say Linux is excellent for wi-fi , also most servers run on linux.
You must know that Unix is not originaly created for PC, Linux is just patched unix kernel.
ahh on itchio...i downloaded many games from there and i try them all ,i am not happy very much.
Many of them are worst than old abandoned pc games.
and for windows i watch documentary about how 5 people(one of them is woman) work on windows 98.
They don't leave working place for cca 6 months and after that win98 arrive.
They have great enthusiasm about his work ( they are pay by Bill gates of course)..that is the right way to do the job.
And imagine today ,how is big Microsoft machinery..ha?

While there is a lot of bloat in some distributions, there are distributions like Tiny Core or Arch that give you a more barebones experience. Personally I don't mind having the extra bloat because even on lower spec modern computers you will typically get equal or greater performance than Windows. Also Linux on the desktop has come a long way in the past 20+ years. The desktop experience is in my opinion where Linux beats Windows. You have lots of options on Desktop Environments, Window Managers, Package Managers, and the ability to configure whatever you want. You must know that Unix is not originaly created for PC, Linux is just patched unix kernel. Linux is not patched from Unix. Unix was a proprietary operating system that was originally developed by Bell Labs. Linux was an entirely open source kernel released under the GPL by Linus Torvalds. Linux copies Unix's design but does not share any of its proprietary code. |

There is thousands of sources all over the internet as well as multiple court documents on the kernel's license as well as the actual source code that proves me right. The original developers of Unix don't even dispute this. When you first posted this claim I went back and verified all this before replying just to be sure. Unix was completely proprietary when the Linux kernel was first released. That would have been a multi-million dollar lawsuit if they had released the code to the Unix kernel. If you can provide a source for your claim I will be glad to read it. |

johnno56, Ha...I see. Perhaps I am ignorant in this aspect. aurel,I only downloaded a few games from Itch.io and they are not too good as well!!  I will try my best to make high-quality games in the future because I want to try to sell games. n00b,Wow! You know a lot of the details of Linux. Thanks.
