I think MonkeyX is the 'next generation' of blitzbasic? Could be wrong. Runs on Windows and Mac and is completely open source. MonkeyX did not require installation. Extracted to its own folder and ran within that.
Monkey's IDE is similar to Blitz but when it executes it creates a minimal server that then runs the program through the browser.
Ran "out of the box" on my Linux machine without error. Graphics, sprites, mouse, keyboard and sound all performed without a problem.
---------------------------------------------
While I'm on the subject of Monkey...
Downloaded monkey2 (also open source) - itchio donation optional
The Monkey2 executable, by default, will install to your "C:\" drive. Modify if you don't like that...
This program also ran "out of the box". The IDE has the typical "paneled" look of IDE's like Atom. A little "busier" by easy enough to follow. All of the samples That I tied ran very smoothly without error. Executing is a little different. F5 (run) presents two options: Gui or Console. Regardless of either choice, the loaded program has to compile, then run. Compiling is noticeably slower than Monkey X and Blitz. Not a "deal breaker", but for the impatient among us, it can be slightly annoying....
Time for coffee...
