Just asked my first question. After logging off I realized that I am asking myself the question. lol Being the only person signed up, kind of makes asking questions, pointless... lol I think maybe some code examples or simple tutorial or machine specific information might be the best thing to start with on a new forum... What was I thinking?... *sigh*

aurel I registered as well. I don't have much to post at the moment but it would be cool if it could become something like the old BasicProgramming forum.

Basic-Programming Forum? I'm going to assume that it may no longer exist. Can you tell us a little more?

There is no real danger in this case. All you risk is someone else posting pranks using your user name, but even this is extremely unlikely. The problem is that some browsers and extensions will display a warning before accessing this page and/or filling forms on it what may discourage people from registering and posting.
Why should I pay for someone else's forum? Well, I can donate some money if the forum proves to be a good place for BASIC users, but if you can't afford 50 dollars/pounds/euros a year then simply don't start one. Free hostings have bad terms and conditions and poor performance. As long as there are five members posting 10 messages a week, everything should be fine. At least for some time.
I'm not stopping anyone from joining. Feel free to register and prove me wrong. BTW Do you know how many forums has Aurel started? And how many of them have been succesful? Many and none are the answers.

Tomaaz,
I personally create an account on a Forum mainly by "subject" in this case, Basic. As I have no knowledge of Aurel creating other Forums, I have to accept/reject his suggestions based on what I know of him. Most people online do not know any of us and as such cannot form an opinion as to whether or not a Forum will fail based on the personality of the Forum creator. Failure is usually caused by lack of traffic. Lack of traffic is usually cause by lack of interest in the Forum subject matter (in this case Basic). If I thought for one moment, that Aurel would fail, I would not have been the first to sign up. You are obvious within your rights to hold whatever opinion that you have of Aurel. As do I. Time will be the great test of our opinions...
As to the security, cost and performance issues... I'm not clever enough to speak on those matters.

Aurel, Proboards is not a free hosting. It's a forum platform where you can have a "free" forum with ads.
Johnno, I used to be a member on all the forums Aurel has mentioned in this topic. Apart from me and Aurel no other members are active anymore. After the forums started to disappear, no one was interested in joining/starting new forums (especially with domains like basic.super-hosting598.super-internet798.com). I can understand your enthusiasm, but you really shouldn't expect to much from another of Aurel's creation. Free hostings have very bad terms and conditions. They can delete/block your site at any time and for no reason. While you may get a decent amount of space and monthly data the site will not perform well if it becomes busy. And if you don't have a good domain name, your site won't be easy to find in search engines. Plus links to it may be even blocked on some platforms. The problem with secure connection is easy to understand. Your browser will let you know that connection to the site is not secure and you're at risk. This is a standard warning nowadays and many people won't be able to understand that in this specific case there is no real danger. All of this to avoid a monthly cost that is less than a cost of a pint in a decent pub? Really?

The sdlbasic website has been around for at least 14 years (when I first joined) and there are only a few of us left. I don't know about all this domain stuff... I hear about it from time to time... but it's tech that's over 'my' head. lol
A good domain or a bad domain will certainly impact the time that sites "park" there... For we Basic users, who only make up a 'sniff-teenth' of the programming community, and do not attract much "passing traffic". Drag and drop, rapid development type software, is attracting a lot of youngsters these days... High attention to "immediate gratification" or quick $ seem to be the trend... We cannot hope to "compete" because it's like comparing apples with oranges. That being said, a lot of sites, that do not appeal to a users interest, will by default, "fade away". Certainly, personality clashes within a Forum, will also have an impact on member numbers, as will poor leadership.
I have been with RCBasic now for just over 3 years. We don't have a large crew but we hope that this will change for the better. Sure, we get some "quirky" visitors; we get visitors that just move on; very few decide to stay for "the long haul". But that's ok. As long as there are people interested in "hard coding" in Basic, Basic sites, will still be around... We have plenty of room for 'new' members... nudge, nudge, wink, wink. Say no more... (couldn't resist a 'sales pitch'... lol)
Have a great day! For me, mine is going to be better, as long as coffee is involved... lol

A few more and we could form a virtual cricket team... Another 11 more and we could form a virtual Australian Rules football team... Cool...
