Do you remember, a short while ago, that I had to reinstall my OS due to hard drive failure? ( aurel ... Stop laughing... lol)
That was successfully done and the process of restoring the system to how "I" like it was done...
Now don't get ahead of me... Yesterday (Tuesday) I noticed that all my Desktop icons changed into white icons... No big deal... logout/login... restored. A little while later, the same thing happened but this time I noticed a faint, steady 'click' (about every 2 or 3 seconds)... In my opinion, this is what I call a hard drive's, blue screen of death.... NUTS! That was my last 2TB drive... I know. I know. Buy a decent HDD...
Long story short...I am now reduced to using an under powered (dual core 1.8ghz), I3 Asus laptop... I had to install Linux Lite as it was too slow to run Linux Mint... I cannot play GZDoom!! Running bare bones with RCBasic and Geany (the important stuff)... Time to go shopping...
Aurel. Are you still laughing? lol

I have an old laptop with weak specs that I use for testing purposes. Sometimes its good to have some underpowered hardware just to see how well optimized your code is.

I am not laughing at all John...yes i know the problem, I don't have such a large HDDs...i am lazy to buy anything and i don't need such a big storage devices , good for me ..maybe ? I guess your HDD is SATA or SATA2 then maybe is problem with power connector of this HDD they are sensitive to fine dust, also problem can be in power supply yes if power supply is older they capacitor tend to bubble and must be replaced do you check power supply ? and on end if all other things are OK ..then really HDD going to get over .
I still using my low spec dual core with win7 and work ok but Windows is not resource hungry like most BIG linux distros ..including MINT and again i suggest to u to use MXLinux it is better than Linux Lite ...MXLinux simply fly on my dual core with only 2GB or RAM ...350MB/2GB used ..what you saying??? LinuxLite take about 600MB in cold run..so MX is better in any sense

I had MX on the laptop but it did not get used much. Tried Linux Mint Mate (less resources but nowhere near MX) but then my main drive failed and needed an OS... I had Linux Lite on hand and threw that onto the laptop. By the way, Lite functions ok... not fast... but ok. The laptop has 500mb drive with 4gb of ram... According to Mint website it meets the minimum requirements... lol It runs... but sssllloooowww.... But you are correct... MX is definitely more responsive than Lite... As soon as I get my main machine up and running, MX is going back onto the laptop!!
The problem is definitely drive related... This will make you laugh... The last spare 200gb drive that failed was last used to install Linux Mint 17.0 - in 2014!! Nine years old! It was only guaranteed for three years! Power supply is fine, maybe a little dusty, but fine... Oh no! What are the odds that IT too will die? lol
Anyway... I only have to put up with this dark ages laptop until the weekend... Total clean and installation of the main machine... AFTER the purchase of a couple of NEW drives...
I do not like Linux Lite OR using the laptop... I miss my main machine... *sigh*

Western Digital. Purchased 2. Gotta have a backup, right? lol
Update: Turns out that the old hard drive was only "part" of the issue. Looks like a potential problem with the motherboard. Going to rebuild. Ordering an MB, CPU and RAM. I will also be switching from Intel to AMD. For the short term, I will endure this old laptop, for as long as needs be... Hopefully it will not be too long. The old I3 laptop runs fine... But when you are used to using an I5... it is kind of slow... lol

AMD so much better on linux than intel or nvidia.

Oh snap! Forgot about the video card! Thank you for the reminder!
Yes AMD is slightly cheaper but but is more efficient. Particularly when it comes to CPU's...

ATX 620 Power supply is ok. Voltages; fan and Caps are all ok. Case is ok as well.
I want to steer clear of Intel and NVidia as much as possible. I have always had issues with NVidia drivers on Linux. Only used NVidia because the Linux default video drivers are ok but not so good for 3D-type games. I am hoping to have all the components by the weekend.
