Next year will be the 10th Anniversary for RCBasic. The earliest build of RCBasic was released back in late 2014 (I am not exactly sure of the exact day). As such, I was thinking about hosting a RCBasic Game Jam to celebrate. Since it would probably only be members from this community I wanted to get your feedback on whether you think its a good idea and who would want to participate. It wouldn't be until sometime next year so there really is no rush. I also think it would be best to have a month long Jam since we all have lives and probably don't have the time to crunch for 48 hours.
Let me know what you think and also what you think would be a good month to hold it next year.

10 years! Well done! Having RCBasic involved in Game Jams (participating or hosting) can and will always be an ideal way to "show off" the abilities of RCB.
Personally, I think that a Jam is a great idea and will probably serve as an encouragement to all our members ( ... I know, myself included... ) to devote more time to creating, not just games - ok mostly games - and applications. All work can then be used to promote RCB on a wider scale. Having said that... "Will I participate?"... The thought is quite terrifying actually... lol Next year you say? Ok. Hopefully I may be able to come up with something by then... *gulp*
Length of the Jam... A month sounds good if starting from scratch using RCB only but shorter may be necessary if using an "engine"
Which month? As you are uncertain as to when RCB started, then perhaps, pick a month with a popular holiday/season/event and suggest a game/program based on that? May I suggest that you do not wait too long into the year... but, then again, some of us could use the extra time to create a Thanksgiving or Christmas game... lol

I wish I had done a better job back then of documenting release history but the original website is long gone and the websites I posted the earliest versions on are also no longer online.
I guess choosing a month around a holiday would be a good idea but I figured most people would be too busy spending time with there family to participate and since we are all in different countries we probably don't all celebrate many other holidays. Maybe Valentines Day. It would probably be better to do it in February or March anyway since that is usually the months were we have the highest number of people online.

There is always the, well used, genre and let the participant select the 'type' of game. Some Jams use just a single word and leave it up to participants to "interpret"...
Whatever method you choose to run with will, in my opinion, be worth the experience and the fun...

I think we can plan to hold the jam in February next year then. Everyone can suggest a theme in this thread and we will randomly pick from one of the suggestions the day before the jam starts.
I am looking forward to everyone's participation. As with any jam, if you need help you can always post here.

Oh man! I just had a feeling that you were going to "poll the group" for suggested themes... Me personally, I like "retro".
Quick question(s)... Can I assume that the game entry would have to be made from scratch (engine or not) and not a game submitted to other Jams? Will this be for group or individual (or both) submissions?

The only rule is that it would have to be made in RCBasic. If you are using my engine, TBird's framework, or any other tools shared here that is fine since its all RCBasic. If you want to use a previous jam entry that is fine as long as you make some changes during this jam (add new levels, change some graphics, etc.)

I am still struggling to come up with an idea for a game... Creating something new and or different, for me anyway, is a bit difficult. I am still thinking...

I am still struggling to come up with an idea for a game... Creating something new and or different, for me anyway, is a bit difficult. I am still thinking... We still need to decide on a theme. You already suggested retro but it doesn't look like we will be getting any other ideas. I am also going to suggest fantasy as a theme. Its literally the only theme that no one on this forum has never tackled.

Hmm... Fantasy you say... well, that knocks the wheels off a SciFi shoot-em-up... lol I was actually toying with the idea a a text adventure (I know, I know... retro before graphics, right?) but, without an engine/framework, attempting a purely Basic version, is a TON of work. Not impossible, but a ton of work, none the less...
By the way... What kind of interest has your Jam generated? Judging by your statement, "doesn't look like we will be getting any other ideas", would indicate that the numbers, at the moment, are fairly low? Maybe it will pick up soon? Maybe an occasional promotion? Like the old saying says, "Out of sight. Out of mind."
I have several ebooks about fantasy games and how to make them... they are all written using Basic but during the time of line numbers and highly annoying goto statements... but they may be a good source of ideas...
Just to be clear... when you mentioned 'Fantasy', you had in mind games like, on a quest to find some treasure or rescue some unfortunate and in the process there will be the obligatory battles with this critter and that critter... health and stamina and all that stuff, right? Oh, I can feel a brain hurt about to happen that even caffeine will not be able to fix... a TON of work... *sigh*

johnno56 I will post the event on itch.io once I get v3.21 out which should be in about a week hopefully. I added some fancy new demos to the next release that will hopefully be some good eye candy and may generate some interest. By fantasy, I was thinking something in a medieval type setting. Sci-Fi would be good also. How about we combine them into Science Fantasy. I am just throwing ideas out there. Also, I was going over all the rcbasic games created over the last 9 years and realized that a lot of them are not even on the forum. I am going to bundle all the freely available games into a zip and post that on the forum some time soon as well. I don't think most new people on the forum realize just how much has already been made so they don't have a good idea of what can be done.

n00b, I love the idea of high fantasy setting, that's my favorite genre, but I can also come up with many ways to incorporate sci-fi and fantasy.

I think since we have 2 ideas, we can probably make both Sci-fi and Fanstasy the theme and we can just choose between them. I don't want the theme to be too restrictive so I think we will just go with that. Since we have themes, anyone who wants to start now is more than welcome to. You basically have 6 months if you start now.

Out of curiosity what type of fiction is a person gains magic abilities by having body parts chirurgicallly replaced with blessed artifacts into which essences of omnipotent gods have been encaged, and to be not eaten by these artifacts one must consume a a drug only present on special places and which is the offspring of these omnipotent gods.
